'Skins' TV Drama - Digital Essay

The following and the above stills are all taken from season 1 of 'Skins', so right from the beggining, the producer is developing a stereotype of teenagers. This still is a full body shot, so the audience can see the girls outfit and make a judgement. The fact that she's looking dishevelled, waeing smeared makeup and is only just comming home in the morning, conotes that she's been partying all night. This immediatley conforms to the negative stereotype the media potray of teenagers.

Photo Story- Treatment Production Project.

A Dead End
For this weeks homework we were asked to create a photo story on a 'teen issue', in this case- teen deaths on the road. One structuralist theory that applies to the above photo story is 'Barthes' as it definitely has some symbolic code. For example, the last shot is a black screen. I've used this as a metaphor for 'death'. This would evoke enigma because the audience would have to work out what the symbolism in the last slide means, taking into account the previous shots. My photo story also has symbolic code because this is the type of advert the media would make because sadly teenagers are stereotyped to be the obvious victims of road related accidents supposedly because of carelessness and obsessive use of technology - which is why I've pictured the main character turning her music up to full volume and getting distracted by a text when crossing the road. So here I've tried to portray the typical representation of teenagers in the media.
The other structuralist theory that I would say applies is 'Todorov' because I've tried to create a structured narrative ie: a beginning, middle(climax) and end. The beginning or equilibrium would be the main character leaving her house and walking down the road and the middle climax or dis-equilibrium is her turning up her music to full and reading a text while crossing the road.

Mildred Pierce- How Women are Represented in the Media

'Mildred Pierce' series 2011 with Kate Winslet.

The first version of 'Mildred Pierce' filmed in 1945 with Joan Crawford.
The plot of this film follows Mildred who divorces her unfaithful husband and brings up two children on her own. This narrative shows Mildred breaking away from the 'feminine mystique', which was the term Friedan uses to describe the traditional idea that women are to "confine themselves to narrow roles of housewife and mother, forsaking education and career aspirations in the process". Mildred is forced because of her financial situation to do the complete opposite of this. The words on the 1945 DVD version above says 'The kind of woman most men want- but shouldn't have!' This film  has been filmed and out together from a male point of view- 'The male gaze' because the words on the front target men. The fact that some men may like strong willed and independent women is targeted here, hence the statement on the front of the DVD.
Mildred's daughter Veda, is also portrayed through the male gaze. The fact that she goes onto try and blackmail a rich family with a fake pregnancy is using the stereotype that some women are goldiggers and are only interested in men for their money and what they can get from them. Mildred though goes against the stereotype that was prevalent at the time when it was first filmed, in that she isn't the wife that crumbles under pressure, can't do anything for herself and has no beliefs and ideas of her own. She overcomes the death of her younger daughter, stands by what she thinks is right and moves on in life.

Horror still

For the 'Horror still' we were required to do, my brother Hansel took a picture of me looking back. This is meant to dennotate that something is about to happen.  This could suggest I've maybe heard footsteps or noise behind me. It sets a very relaxed an domestic setting, someone maybe walking home from work before something horrific happens which follows the typical horror mis-en-scene.

Although this picture is dark, I thougut I'd use it to look like an overexposed picture as my eyes look red. Its a shot that shows my whole body unlike the one above, but you still cant see whats behind me that I'm looking at which creates a scary tension. The fact that its a still shows that I could be in the middle of running away from something.

Media uage in a week post 2

I used my mobile all this morning from about half past 6 when I woke up answering texts from friends and arranging to do things over the weekend. I think text messaging is helpful because you can keep in touch with literally everybody but quickly and without having to drop everything you're doing, even though in my case, I was busy getting ready for school.

Media usage in a week

I've just finished watching the X factor on TV. Watching TV is probably one of the widest used media as it's a good and entertaining way of unwinding and can be done with others or alone. I read that fifty years ago people never thought that TV would be as popular as the radio because no one would have the time or want to spend it sitting and passively watching something!
